Team James C. Furnivall - Managing Partner
Jim has spent more than 20 years in investment banking and private equity. Prior to becoming part of the founding team at Alterna he spent 11 years at Canaan Partners, a venture capital firm with more than $2 billion under management. As a General Partner at Canaan, he was responsible for leading the firm’s technology investment activities on the East Coast. While at Canaan he originated, structured, closed, managed and achieved liquidity on 14 investments. In addition, he played an integral part in managing the firm and its fundraising activities.
Prior to Canaan Partners he was involved in capital raising and M&A transactions with an aggregate value of more then $4 billion at Bear Stearns and PaineWebber. These transactions were completed for a variety of corporate clients in the technology and manufacturing industries. He holds a B.S.E in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and an M.B.A with Distinction from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Roger P. Miller - Managing Partner
Roger has spent nearly 30 years in various facets of commercial banking and finance, with the last 20 years focused on structured financial products and Core Capital Asset investing. He has led and advised on transactions related to alternative energy, commercial aircraft, industrial facilities, portfolio acquisitions and mineral resource development. Prior to co-founding Alterna, Roger was a Managing Director in Citigroup's Core Capital Asset investment business responsible for strategic initiatives. He holds a B.S. in Mining Engineering from Montana School of Mines and an MBA from Cornell University Eric M. Press - Managing Partner
A co-founder of Alterna, Eric has over 25 years of experience investing in core capital assets. Formerly a Managing Director in Citigroup's Core Capital Assets investment business, he was Head of Global Origination for the group. With responsibility for all rail equipment investments for the past 7 years and all “big-ticket” investment for the past year, he led the effort to grow rail investment to be one of the largest and most profitable bank owned operating lessors in the United States. He holds a B.S. in Economics from SUNY Binghamton and an MBA from Tulane University Harry V. Toll - Managing Partner
Harry has over 22 years of experience creating and managing investments in a broad range of core capital assets. Prior to co-founding Alterna, he was the co-founder, Managing Director and Business Head of the Core Capital Assets investment business at Citigroup. From inception this business grew to $2.4 billion of direct investment in assets with market value exceeding $7 billion. Harry has a B. S. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from Purdue University and completed Citigroup's Advanced Corporate Finance and Senior Risk Management programs. At Citigroup he also held a Senior Credit Officer designation. Richard C. Bertkau - Managing Director
Prior to joining Alterna Capital Partners, Richard was with Citigroup for 28 years, most recently for 10 years as Director and Risk Manager in Citigroup’s Core Capital Asset investment business. In this role he managed a $2 billion portfolio of U.S. and cross border leases in the rail, shipping, airline and power generation industries. In addition to his experience with Citigroup’s Core Capital Asset investment business, Richard headed a marketing unit in Citigroup’s private bank, managed an internal credit review team, was a corporate relationship manager, and headed Citibank’s branch in Muscat, Oman.
Before joining Citibank, Mr. Bertkau spent two years in the US Peace Corps as a law professor at the University of Liberia. Mr. Bertkau holds an AB in American Studies from Amherst College and a JD from the University of Michigan.
Mark S. Satran - Director
Mark joined Alterna after spending 5 years as a Director with Pitney Bowes Global Financial Services, where he was responsible for pricing and structuring of all financial services programs, analytical and reporting support for a business with $2.5BB assets and new product development. Previously Mark was the Manager of Financial Structuring for GE Capital’s Vendor Financial Services business, where he had responsibility for investment analysis for new 3rd party vendor programs. From 1990 to 1997, Mr. Satran worked for Citicorp Global Equipment Finance. He was responsible for originating new vendor programs and was a Product Development and Pricing Analyst. Mark received a B.S. from Babson College with a double major in Finance/Investments and Entrepreneurial Studies. Mr. Satran also completed the Citicorp Institute for Global Finance, a post-MBA training program administered by Citibank.
